The city of Fairbury was first laid out in 1857 by Caleb L. Patton and Octave Chanute. Like a lot of Illinois towns of the 1850's, the town was originally centered on a depot ground.

Fairbury is well known for its American Legion Speedway, a very popular racetrack that has been around since 1946. Fairbury has three parks: The Fugate Woods Nature Preserve, Marsh Park, and Northpark. Fairbury is home to two farmsteads, the Kilgus Farmstead and the Slagel Family Farm.
