Shopping for a Home Across the Nation

by Terry Sullivan - Lyons-Sullivan Realty

Ever wonder what it costs to live in other parts of the country? Of course, real estate prices vary widely depending on property, location, market status and even season.

We researched homes from the 12 bedroom, 12 bathroom home in Bennington, Vermont to the 2 bedroom, one bathroom home in Great Bend, Kansas.

Care to venture a guess on the prices of these two properties? On 11 acres, the home in Bennington, Vermont is listed at $2,175,000. On a quarter-acre lot, the home in Great Bend, Kansas is listed at $37,900. These two properties have one thing in common: they are both located in cities of less than 20,000 people.

For this very informal study, we searched for properties with 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms and around 1,500 square feet on quarter-acre lots in U.S. cities with populations less than 20,000 people.

Our results are listed by region of the country. Take a look and see how the Livingston County area stacks up.

Midwest Real Estate Wraps Up 2015

by Terry Sullivan - Lyons-Sullivan Realty

States throughout the Midwest are enjoying the last of the beautiful fall colors and heading into the holiday season and chillier weather. As the market definitely improved in 2015, many Midwest REALTOR® Association leaders looked forward and then reflected on the past year.

From our very own Illinois Association of REALTORS®:

“The fall housing market has shown little sign that there’s any significant weakening in demand,” said Mike Drews, President of the Illinois Association of REALTORS®. “While we always see a seasonal slowdown this time of year, this month’s numbers were quite strong, and indeed were the best sales numbers for September in a decade.”

In Indiana, an excellent outlook as described by said Brownsburg’s Bruce Bright, 2015 President of the Indiana Association of REALTORS®:

“We expect to be heading into the usual seasonal drop-off, but right now, Indiana’s economy is ranked No. 8 for business climate and No. 10 for job creation in the nation. The Hoosier State’s strong economic position—plus ultra-low borrowing rates—may help soften blows to housing activity linked with the cold season.”

The Iowa Association of REALTORS® encourages buyers to plan for the holidays:

“The low inventory level in many markets continues to shorten the selling process. We reached a new 5-year low with 63 days on market,” stated Jon Yocum, President of the Iowa Association of REALTORS®. “With interest rates still hovering around 4 percent, it is still a great time to sell your home and settle in to your new home before the holidays.”

And in Minnesota, CEO of the Minnesota REALTORS® Association, pointed out that while inventory dipped about 5% this fall, the number of buyers also trailed off with the start of the school year and the impending fall and winter season.

And finally, our neighbor to the north, Wisconsin, weighed in on the state of the market this year:

“It was a great summer for home sales, and we seem to be carrying that momentum into the fall selling season. This is shaping up to be a very good year if sales continue at this rate,” said K.C. Maurer, Wisconsin REALTORS® Association board chairman.
